چکیده

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is one of the most frequently used tools for the characterization of nanomaterials. Aberration-correction has revolutionized the field of electron microscopy and now equipment is commercially available providing sub-Gngström resolution and single atom sensitivity for atomic, electronic, and chemical structure analyses. In this entry, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and related techniques are reviewed in the framework of nanomaterials sciences. Three examples from the areas of catalysis, hydrogen storage, and nanoscale thin films, are used to demonstrate experimental capabilities and current resolution limits.

Increasing Depth Resolution of Electron Microscopy of Neural Circuits using Sparse Tomographic Reconstruction

Future progress in neuroscience hinges on reconstruction of neuronal circuits to the level of individual synapses. Because of the specifics of neuronal architecture, imaging must be done with very high resolution and throughput. While Electron Microscopy (EM) achieves the required resolution in the transverse directions, its depth resolution is a severe limitation. Computed tomography (CT) may ...

Ultra-high resolution scanning electron microscopy of biological materials.

In recent years, several ultrahigh resolution scanning electron microscopes (SEM) were successively developed. They were all equipped with a field emission electron gun and an objective lens with a short focal length, and showed a resolution better than 1 nm. With such instrument, not only intracellular structures but also virus, bacteriophages, and biological macromolecules were clearly observ...

Two-Photon Microscopy for Deep Tissue Imaging of Living Specimens

Introduction Two-photon microscopy (2PM) provides threedimensional (3D) and four-dimensional (4D) (x, y, z, t) imaging in living specimens or under experimental physiological conditions very close to live. In conjunction with fluorescent labels, 2PM provides a powerful means of investigating the relationships between structure and function at the microscopic level that are key to understanding ...

Diethylene Glycol-Mediated Synthesis of Nano-Sized Ceria (CeO2 )Catalyst

Nano-crystalline particles of CeO2 have been synthesized by a low temperature chemical precipitation method. The precursor materials used in this research were Ce(NO3)3.6H2O, NaOH and diethylene glycol as surfactant. X-ray powder diffraction results showed that face centered cubic CeO2 nanoparticles with crystalline size in nanometer scale were formed. Scanning electron microscopy measurement s...

Aberration-Corrected Electron Microscopy of Nanoparticles

The very rich history of electron microscopy started with the discovery of the duality wave–particle. In the 1920s, the beginning of the twentieth century, it was shown that electrons could also behave as a wave. The optical microscopy based on Abbe’s theory already achieved the resolution limit ~ / ~ , λ 2 2 500Å. The electrons are located at high voltages and hence will have much shorter wave...
